dc.description.abstract Traditional mode of teaching and learning are offered in universities, schools, technical colleges and also in private colleges. In Sri Lanka ESL learning and teaching are provided through the traditional mode from primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. In the traditional mode teachers struggle everyday with their learners who show enthusiasm only at the beginning of the class and later show not much interest and attend classes irregularly. The performance in the writing skill especially its very poor. This study investigated the effects of using innovative ESL strategies on the traditional mode of learning ESL writing skills of the first year Arts students of the University of Jaffna. A random sample of fifty first year students were selected. They were divided into two groups a5 A and B. New strategies were used for group B. Data was collected through the use of interview with the staff involved in teaching the two groups. The findings revealed that there are positive effects in the u5e of innovative ESL strategies for the traditional mode of learning of ESL writing skills. This study has an implication to incorporate innovative strategies to learn ESL writing skills en_US
